Finally, Some Competition

You remember my uproar last week over Telus and Bell's new plan to start charging for incoming text messages. It's just another example of the free reign that Canada's few cell phone companies have over consumers. They've been able to charge whatever they want. Hopefully, that's about to change.

Industry Minister Jim Prentice says he expects lower prices in about a year, now that 15 companies have bid billions to use new this bandwith licensed by the federal government. It'll take some time for the companies to set up service, but when they do, the Big Phone Companies will finally have some competition.

I always wonder when I look at my phone bill. How can you charge me this much for using imaginary phone waves? Why aren't we like in the States, where both phones and plans are dirt cheap. Here, your phone gets wrecked and you have to fix it. There, you throw your phone in the garbage can and get a new one.

Sure, I'd like an iPhone, but to make it even remotely affordable, I'd have to sign a 3-year contract. I'm in one now- worst thing I ever did. But that's how they get you.

Maybe these new companies will force the Big Phone Companies to treat us as they should- as the people that pays their salaries.

By the way... on a side note... if anyone's wondering where I've been lately on the morning show- I've been filling in on News Talk 650 because we're in full-on holiday mode. Can't wait to be back! Not that sorry I missed "naked show day" though.
