Act Like You Been There Ovechkin You Bum

You know what I find funny?  People (Shack and Watson in particular this morning) are all over me about "jumping on the Don Cherry train."  And it's like fella's, I been riding that baby for years!  You want to talk about jumping on bandwagons, well I am not stamping my ticket for the "I love Ovechkin and all that he brings to the game and Crosby has become a whiny baby" train!  I don't get it?  I don't know why it's so cool to love Ovechkin and to hate Crosby.  What did he do?

This all stems from the show today about how Don Cherry was upset with Ovechkin's "over the top" celebrations.  And I agree with Don.  Act like you been there.  I played hockey for 8 years.  And I felt when your battling another team, and they get a goal.  It's heartache enough.  But it becomes a zillion times worse when the person that scored is jumping all over the ice.  And you know what?  Honestly, I been on a team with a guy like that, and when he would celebrate your kinda almost backing off of him and saying, "man, take it down a ladder rung."  It's embarrassing.  And Don is right, players will get fed up with this and someone's gonna hurt him good one day. (For evidence see Steve Ott from the weekend).

Ok in the NFL these guys go and pretend to sign the football and ride the luge and it's almost clever.  Ovechkin's aren't in anyway creative or clever, it's just persistently over the top.  Don't give me this, "he has passion for the game," make me puke!  How about you have some respect for the game and its' players both past and present.  Case in point, is scoring the EMPTY NET goal against Canada in the World Juniors.  Was that necessary?

Here's a little youtube montage.  What do you think? (Yes even you Commie sympathizers haha)

Cheers, gregger@rock102rocks..com

shut up

watch the video. is it really that bad? the guy gives a crash into the boards here and there. Gregger don't give me this "it hurts to get scored on enough", it's not like the guys are out there to make friends, it is a tough physical competition, It's a competition and you WANT to get into the other guys head. I just really don't see what's wrong with a young guy playing like ever goal he scores is the biggest of his career. He is the new wave of hockey so get used to it, or watch a friendly match of polo, it may have the sportsmenship you oh so crave.

this is why I play curling

this is why I play curling and not hockey. In hockey if you get to the top (or anywhere), somebody is gonna like you and somebody is gonna hate you no matter what you do.

oh and not to mention curling is cheaper and safer

Let's not forget...

who the current hockey pool champ is! I look at the pool trophy with great pride everyday. Ok, it's actually in a box somewhere in the basement...whatever. You're just grumpy like 'ol Cherry there that our Canadian super hero Sid the Kid isn't keeping up to expectations and that Ovechkin is lighting up our game. Alex is fun to watch because he plays with more finesse than anyone else in the game, but also plays with a grit Canadian fans appreciate. He loves what he's doing and wants to win while doing it. But I know you don't like anything 'happy', like happy music or happy people, so I can see why you wouldn't care for Ovechkin that much. He's just too damn happy!!

Watson

When your the best you can do what you want.

When you are the absolute best at something then you can celebrate the way you want. If you look at the goals that AO scores half of them are on TSN honour roll because there the best goals scored in the league. So when people say he's over the top there nuts because if anyone else could score the kind of goals he could they would be jumping around a nd screaming too. So to re-cap AO celebrations awesome cause he's the best Gregger not the best.

would

gregger would you be saying this if it was the whiner sid the kid?cherry is pissed because ao is not canadian, the kid is having a blast and getting paid to do it. i little green envy me thinks.

Actually

If anyone cares to know, Ovechkin and Crosby are actually both averaging 1.32 points per game so I don't know why anyone thinks either is way better than the other? Crosby has gotten some pretty hilite real goals and moves in his own regard.

Maybe...just maybe...

the Ovechkin train is gaining steam... because he's the league's most exciting player and people find him entertaining to watch! He's exactly what the NHL needs right now.  Stamp yer ticket!  You're going to miss out.

Watson

The guy making Gregger puke

RE : Maybe...just maybe...

Nice call Watson.  I'll listen to what you have to say about hockey when your not second to last in the hockey pool!  (The only guy lower right now is Shack!)  This blog is about hockey, not shoes!

Gregger

Don't hate the player, hate

Don't hate the player, hate the game! Seriously, if AO wasn't the hottest ticket right now would he still be under your objective eye? All I see in this debate is people trying to take AO down a peg because he is top dog right now. If you bust him down you have to bust down everyone who celebrates after a goal, its a simple as that. And the only way to eliminate celebration it is to set up fines. With the removal of after goal celebrations comes the removal of the excitment of the game. As a fan i want my team to be just as into it as i am and AO provides that.

let us also not for get that

let us also not for get that flamboyent action, attitude and style is what added to the fame of Don Cherry. While his coaching accolades do speak for themselves, the other reasons above is what is driving his current celebraty status. I am reminded of a quote:

The Pot: "Hey Kettle... ya you! Look at ya, sitting there all black!"

John Q. Public

what abput gretzky ?

Remember his celebrations, when he used to the reverse moon walk on the tips of his skates ?

IF AO celebrates like that and no one takes him in to the boards right after, then I guess it's ok with the players and if it's ok with them, then I don't really care.

remember Jaromir Jagr's celebration with the mitt off and the hand going sky-ward ? I thought that was dumb and cocky but if he wanted to do it, he could.

I rambled a bit, sorry.

Ove

Hey Gregger,

I was listening this morn and I thought it was kinda funny that you compared your rec hockey leauge to the NHL. It's one thing to celebrate like Ove does in a close game in the NHL, but to celebrate like that in rec hockey ie delibrately attempt to enrage/demoralize the other team is not cool. Ove is playing at the highest level of hockey there is! He deserves to celebrate and he only does it when the game is close. I play in a local floor hockey "league" and there are a couple of douches that celebrate ever time they score on our team even if they are up 17-2. They are losers in my mind. We are playing floor hockey for god's sake ... NHL is far far away from our little league. Ove is a god ... he can celebrate accordingly!

RE : Ove

I don't have any NHL experience to draw on, I played organized hockey from tyke to pee-wee (that's my 8 years and I don't know what the levels are called here in Saskatchewan).  But once I realized I wasn't going to be drafted I promptly pulled myself from the game and got a job!  I still believe despite his talking to the contrary, you know damn well when Ovechkin celebrates, he is digging it to the others as hard as he can!

Gregger

Why wouldn't he> In any pro

Why wouldn't he> In any pro sport the amount of s&^t talking that goes on is phenomenal. You don't know what's being said to him by the lesser skilled players during the game. I know when I played double A Midget hockey it was a tactic to continue to get under the other teams skin and get them to take stupid penalties and make mistakes. It's part of the game anyone who has played on a upper level will tell you the same.
